Traditional Arts: Pendleton Moccasins

May 19 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm         $100

Pendleton Moccasins

Authentic Native American foot wear. This workshop is an 8-hour hands-on project that is Coeur d’Alene Tribal member guided. It is a 2 piece moccasin pattern. All materials are provided. At the end of this course you will go away with a completed pair of moccasins for yourself.

The importance of Pendleton material:

Prior to the time of contact, we provided for ourselves by natural means. Robes were made from materials in our environment such as hides and fur. The Coeur d’Alene people experienced their first contact with the non-natives in 1806. It wasn’t until three years later we had introduction to trade. The first fur traders known to the Coeur d’Alene were members of the Northwest Company, including David Thompson who was a partner in the company. Thompson and his men built the Kullyspell House September, 1809 on Pend Oreille Lake near Hope Idaho. The introduction of trade goods changed the use of traditional materials. “Trade blankets” began to replace hide and fur robes.

The Pendleton blanket and Pendleton material is a commercially made product. However, Native America embraces its use. The use and exchange of Pendleton material is important to our culture. Pendleton is a highly valued material to us and is used in many aspects of our ceremonies. We gift Pendleton to celebrate in our give-away ceremonies, births, marriages, name-givings, and as part of our funerary services.

This faithful adaptation by the Royal Shakespeare Company features all the most beloved songs and moments from the 1939 classic film, brought to life onstage. Young Dorothy Gale is swept away by a tornado from her Kansas farm to the magical land of Oz. There, she encounters a host of whimsical characters: good witches, bad witches, animals that talk, scarecrows that walk, and things magical to behold. To find her way home, she must journey along the Yellow Brick Road to see the mysterious and all-powerful Wizard in Emerald City. Along the way, she makes new friends, but must also brave many dangers, including the Wicked Witch of the West, who will stop at nothing to get her hands on Dorothy’s magical ruby slippers. To make it home safely, Dorothy must learn an important lesson: there’s no place like home.

Traditional Arts: Basket Weaving

May 31 @ 2:00 pm - 7:00 pm            $75

lateau Basketry Basics

Basketry is often used in cultural ceremonies, giveaways, births, name-givings, first-food gatherings, weddings, funerals, memorials and other events. Long ago, basket making was only done in the wintertime. Elders are usually the ones who teach the younger generations. Although basketry is primarily made by women, many men also learn the skills of basketry.

Basketry is said to be a dying art, however basketry is still continued today. Columbia Plateau basketry has beautiful and unique characteristics that define it and separate it from other native cultures that produce basketry. Plateau basketry is made in many shapes and sizes and was made for many purposes, mainly domestic in nature. Use of basketry was mostly related to carrying, storing, gathering, or preparing foods. A majority of the basketry produced tends to be intricately decorated with geometric, floral, human and animal patterns.

This is a 6-hour hands-on workshop suitable for ages 15 and over. This is an authentic Coeur d’Alene Tribal member guided workshop. You will create a small round root bag (also known as a “sally bag”).
